Sengoku Basara (戦国BASARA) is the first game in the series and released in Japan on July 21, 2005, for the PlayStation 2 (PS2) as a hack and slash, action game. While Sengoku Basara remains popular in Japan, it has gained some popularity in other Asian countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan. Sengoku Basara is considered to be popular in Japan with the franchise getting good reviews and sales, winning some awards, becoming a cultural phenomenon, having the video games being cited as an example of games as art, and gaining a passionate fanbase. Its story is loosely based on real events of the titular Sengoku period in the history of feudal Japan.
